More than 500 Haitians came to America in 1779 to help Americans win independence from the British in what historians call “the most significant foreign contribution to the American Revolutionary War.” Many Haitians died but it’s documented that their skill on the battlefield was key to saving the lives of thousands of American soldiers in the Siege of Savannah battle.
