Behind the scenes from my first film “A Sealed Fate?” shot up on the ice floes 35 miles off the coast of Newfoundland. The weather conditions during filming were often -25 degrees not including wind chill...! So this past week of #bombcyclone weather in NY reminded me of the extreme measures we took during the film - like having the camera batteries attached to our bodies for warmth with cables connecting them to the cameras. You”ll notice I’m shooting with a Mamiya 67 Pro II which although needs batteries, doesn’t need a battery for the shutter speed 1/400th. Of course wearing a survival suit helps with the cold but was more important if you fell through the ice or stepped into a hole a seal made for fishing. You have about 15 minutes to survive if you do fall in. On one excursion our helicopter pilot fell into a hole and badly bloodied his nose, there wasn’t time to fly in a replacement pilot as an ice storm was approaching so we took our chances that his concussion wasn’t too severe and flew back with our fingers and toes crossed! You can watch the film on my website www.nigelbarker.tv or find it on YouTube or Vimeo #bts #HSUS #savetheseals #phototips
