Nestled in the desert region of Barmer, India is the community of artisan women who embroidered our exquisite Artisan Kaftans. ?
We instantly fell in love with Janki Devi, the matriarch of the group, she was sassy, sarcastic and had us in fits of giggles from the moment we met. Under their watchful eye we were handed the kaftans to see if we could match their embroidering talents – unfortunately not a chance!! I have no idea how they made it look so easy, but they found it hilarious watching us fumbling slowly along.
They explained how fast fashion is destroying these beautiful handicrafts because many companies start their sampling with artisan groups like this one, but with todays speed of fashion, they quickly move their production to a machine so large quantities can be turned around extremely quickly. We love that each of our Sayulita Kaftans were created by hand, each one unique ~ and even though they arrived months late, we know our customers will cherish them!
This visit was a reminder to slow down, especially when when we’re creating ~ because when you truly allow the slowness of fashion to shine though, then you can produce something beautiful and unique, and what’s more, you know it has a story and a journey all of its own…. || Full story by our Product Development Manager @sarah_ackroyd_ who travelled to India with our garment technician @annapriestley earlier this year ?
