Fledgling #Gentoo Penguins nested among a graveyard of #BlueWhale bones in #McMurdo #Antarctica. The blue whale, the largest animal on the planet, was hunted to near extinction in the 1900’s, the Antarctica Peninsula was an area where much of the hunting took place. Flashing forward to present day their numbers have never recovered. Seeing these penguins taking shelter among the skeletal remains was a surreal sight. With climate change rapidly warming the arctic these penguins are facing problems of their own, with heavy loses in sea ice and their main source of food, krill, a small shrimp that feeds on algae and plankton which grows on sea ice. Over the last decade krill has been heavily fished by man through suction harvesting, these tiny shrimp are primarily used as food for fish farms and health supplements, like omega 3 capsules. Something to note is that you can get omega-3’s naturally through a variety of vegetables, nuts and seeds, not just fish and supplements. Krill is a key species, it’s the main source of food for a whales, seals, albatrosses, petrels and all penguins in Antarctica. Krill fishing needs to be regulated responsibly to avoid the same problems we’ve had with so many species of fish in the sea that are now critically endangered due to over harvesting. Now, more than ever, we look to the leadership of #CCAMLR, the council responsible for managing the marine living resources in the waters surrounding Antarctica, to make the right decisions on how Antarcticas oceans are fished responsibly.
