Mottled owls like this one photographed at the Monticello Center in Italy can be found from Mexico through Central America and in forested parts of South America. They are strictly nocturnal birds who spend the night hunting, preening, yawning, stretching, and combing their heads with their claws. To claim his territory, the male will sing in a series of short guttural hoots. Often the female will respond with a much higher, drawn-out call.
