My Dutch Uncle Joseph Purcell has passed- and my heart is full of wonderful memories. Our bond was true and full of affection and he opened the world in so many ways for me-whether it was to make sure my parents, two shy kids in the choir with him at Mars Hill Jr College, actually followed their mutual crushes and ended up creating me, or the photos he took of me as a child that were the reflection of the delight he took IN me as child, whether introducing me to classical music thru his mastery as a pianist, (he used to play this remarkable Ravel concerto for the Left hand ...and yes, he was that good...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KJTUUKAdZDU )
and later as a renowned radio host at WCPE TheClassicalStation, or his tales of Europe from his military service, or the glamorous Barbie doll he gave me that whet my appetite for sophisticated characters; his exciting life as a crew member on an auto racing team; his patience and pride while accompanying me when, as a high school senior, I sang on the biggest stage in Raleigh -the Memorial Auditorium, or when he came to my first opening night on Broadway in CABARET and my wedding across the country, his love was as bold as his head of red hair and he brought something so special to my life that it will alway be with me. My Uncle Joe will rest in my heart.
