I don't love war. I love our troops. Anyone who confuses the two is a moron. I love the men and women who sacrifice their time and lives so that we at home can go about our day. During our trip I had the honor of hearing @jwtrox give motivational speeches to our troops. “We are gonna give the terrorists one of two options, surrender or die. You might have to shoot them in the face or bash in their skulls with your entrenching tool." Now, of course we all cheered because, safe at a show, it's like "hell yeah! Kill'em!" But the more I heard that speech the more it hit me- he's getting the crowd excited, but there is no levity to this statement. He is verbalizing a very real scenario. If I came face to face with an enemy, could I bash their skull in? Could I physically bring myself to that? I don't know. Could you? These men and women take a pledge to do that, to fight and kill. To a civilian, war is something we see in movies, on the news or participate in in Call of Duty. But at the end of the day, war is horrific and our troops are people who sign up to shoulder the burden of war. They do it honorably and the do it selflessly. They do something most of us couldn't even imagine doing. They do it generations at a time, day in and day out and they do it all, partly, so we can sit here at home and freely criticize the concept of war. I think it's easy to focus on the esprit de corps- the patches and coins, the flag flying. And that's okay, that's okay because these men and women work so hard so that most of us won't ever have to have intimate knowledge of what it's like to take a life, whether by close proximity or a drone. I don't deserve a medal for doing USO shows, I consider it an honor as an American to get the opportunity. What I'm most grateful for is the context, the access to their world, even if only for a day- feeling the heavy gear, hearing the rattling explosions (both from proactively fired shots and incoming ones) the deafening sounds of aircraft, the waiting without questioning, the heat, the cold and the ceaseless mission that is protecting our interests. Doing a @theuso tour, while fun, is enlightening. These men and women do what I can’t. ❤️??
