There are 69,381 passenger elevators in New York City, and nearly all of them promise a journey about as exotic as making toast. You get in, you push a button, the doors open a few seconds later at your destination. But there are still a few manually controlled and chauffeur-driven machines around the city. Climbing aboard one of these elevators is more like taking a short trip on the Orient Express. Ramón Rivera has operated one in a Brooklyn building for 35 years. One November morning, he opened his elevator door and Bob Rubin got on. “How you doing, Ramón?” Bob asked. “I’ve had my ups and downs,” Ramón replied. Other manual elevators can be found in neighborhoods where old customs persist, notably along the grand boulevards of the Upper East Side and the more formidable reaches of the Upper West. Some elevator operators attract cult followings. But there are practical considerations for keeping the old elevators, too. At Ramón’s building, the elevator shaft is so narrow that the car would have to be drastically shrunk to make room for the workings of a modern machine.
