American Girl was never really on our radar until recently. The girls were gifted “Gabriela”, the 2017 American Girl Doll a few months ago, and we fell in love with her when we read her story. 
Gabriela loves to sing, loves to act and she has a stutter. As you might already know, my husband Bruce is a person who stutters, as well as my uncle, and a few others in our family. Did you know that 5% of children (1 in 20) ages 2 to 5 will develop some stuttering during their childhood? It could last a few weeks, years, or span their entire life. More than 70 million people worldwide stutter—that’s one in every 100. In the US, more than 3 million people stutter. I loved learning that the American Girl company isn’t just another doll company but a company that focuses on diversity and getting out a message—they brought to light a common struggle and helped to “normalize” it, so to speak. But what they have really done is given girls and boys reassurance and the confidence to say, “Hey, Gabriela is just like me." Even if, within your household having a person who stutters isn’t a part of your everyday life, I love that it could possibly open the conversation where we can educate our young ones and ourselves about it.
