On the last day of our trek to Machu Picchu, which also happened to be their Summer Solstice, we woke up at 4am to start our trek by 5. The goal was to be at the Sun Gate by 8am. We hauled ass and got to see the perfect alignment of the sun through the Sun Gate before feasting our eyes on the ruins for the first time. ? For anyone who is planning to hike the Inca Trail in 4 days, I would also recommend getting permits to hike up Huayna Picchu. It’s worth the extra 30 min. climb!
