#Repost @natasha_theagencyre This. ??? My mom left Scotland when she was 21 years old with the hopes of finding a better life in the U.S. My father left Detroit and moved out west with similar dreams. It was fate that brought them together in sunny Los Angeles, and it was destiny that led them to visit a sleepy town called Santa Barbara —  a town which they never left and still call home to this day. The beautiful Montecito hills were not just the backdrop to my childhood, in my family they were a very real symbol of the American Dream. If you can grow up a street-sweeper’s daughter in Edinburgh and somehow make it to Montecito, you can pretty much do anything in life. Last week after the fires erupted, my parents — like so many others — were forced to evacuate their beloved home. It was heart-wrenching to watch my mom and dad struggle with the emotions wrapped around the possibility of losing all they had built, the possibility of letting go of that Dream. As the fires crept over the hills and hundreds of firetrucks poured into town, a mandatory evacuation was ordered. Reluctantly — after being comforted by so many incredible firefighters on the front lines — my dad strapped on his N-95 mask, packed the car with jewelry, papers and photo albums, propped a ladder by the front door, and helped my mom slowly to the car. I can’t imagine what it felt like for him, seeing his house through the smoke in the rear view mirror, driving away from his American Dream. It’s impossible to express how grateful I am for the over 8,000 Thomas Fire firefighters who came from all over the country to protect my parents, my community, my hometown. Most people run from danger. These brave heroes ran toward it. They save homes. They save lives. They save animals. And, most importantly, they save Dreams. The battle isn’t over, but this Christmas I will be thinking of all the firefighters and their families. I’ll also be thinking about all the wonderful immigrants who are the heartbeat of this amazing country. I still believe you can do anything in America — especially when there are people like @kerncountyfirefighters watching your back. Dreamers keep on dreaming. #thomasfire
