Set designer @janapedan shows us how to create a traditional yule log – the kind burnt over 12 days to celebrate the winter solstice and cleanse the house of sins (i.e. not the pudding kind). Pedan’s guide to making your own yule log:⠀

1. Find a large, sturdy log. Pedan found hers in a forest⠀
2. Apply greenery to the log, which represents fertility in the midst of winter – as do the apples and pomegranates⠀
3. Drill small holes into the log and insert thin, upright candles. This represents light in the darkness⠀
4. Scent is used as a means of warding off evil spirits: rub the log with essential oils, insert cloves and cinnamon sticks to create a cleansing incense⠀
5. Burn the log over the course of 12 days ?⠀
