I’m still in a daze. I’ve seen a LOT of theatre, a lot of broadway, west end, cream of the crop theatre. My favorite shows are Tommy, Les Mis, Aida, South Pacific, The Secret Garden, Rent... a good mix. I have NEVER, in all my years of theatre viewing since childhood, I have NEVER seen a cast work so hard on stage. Especially on a show that has been on tour for over a year- usually there’s a few weak links, everyone is over it a little and you can feel it as an audience member... it’s understandable. Any job is bound to have “desk job” moments. But this fucking cast. Holy shit. The ENERGY, these guys are beasts.
Even if you don’t like musicals (actually, especially if you don’t like musicals) you need to make time in your life and space in your bank account to watch these 36 people work harder than you ever do in one day- and they do it 8x a week! They made me feel like every line and emotion they said/experienced was new to them. I’ve never yelled THANK YOU at a curtain call before, but you bet your ass i was willing to make a fool of myself for these brilliant artists. No fancy sets, scrims, effects... just a basically empty stage, a brilliant (i mean, genius) score and 36 of the most talented, hardworking people I’ve ever seen, telling me a thrilling story I never knew. •
