#wcw Lovefest Pt. 2 @sarahelabdi. My sweet sister Sarah, who has been my roommate, my travel companion, and a deep confidant. This badass babe began her career while still in college, and eventually found herself working as a marketing exec, planning & producing events globally for some of the world’s biggest brands. NBD. But her vision was bigger. When she presented a sweeping CSR plan to the corp she was working for, and was basically met with a “that’s cute little lady go back to your desk” response, she walked. Her purpose fire was LIT, and she doubled down on the qualities she looks at as life pillars. Empathy, community & storytelling, or as she says, “My checklist for what deserves my energy.” She now sits on the board for @obvi._, a Chicago-based nonprofit that empowers women to share their stories. Its online platform, Obvi We’re The Ladies, publishes the work of women identified persons in order to elevate their voices and build communities. Sarah co-created the curriculum for their newly launched high school writing workshop series, Lady to Lady, which teaches young women to explore their interests, expand their communities, and use their voices. She is a Moroccan-Irish daughter and granddaughter of immigrants, who grew up in a predominantly Lutheran town in Minnesota. She also happens to be a Sufi Muslim. Given the political landscape of the last year, I asked her to expand on her experience. “I see the privilege I have as a woman who does not present as Muslim,” she said. “I do not wear a hijab, my skin is lighter than my father’s or my auntie’s. While I am entitled to the anger and fear that I feel towards the #MuslimBan and other acts of prejudice, my privilege of appearance means that my work is to elevate the voices of those who do not share it; who do not feel safe or heard.” I am so honored to call this woman, who cares deeply about educating and empowering women of all ages and elevating the voices of marginalized people, my friend-fam and my ride or die. #WomenSupportingWomen #ObviWereTheLadies
