Russian President Vladimir Putin declared an end to his country's military presence in Syria on Dec. 11, 2017. Putin's remarks at a Russian air base in Latakia province marked his first visit to the country and, the Associated Press reports, the first by a foreign head of state to the war-ravaged nation since the conflict began. He declared victory against the "terrorists" and announced a partial pullout of troops. Russia launched an air campaign in 2015 that allowed Syrian President Bashar Assad's forces to gain the upper hand against the Islamic State and Syrian rebel groups. Video source: Russia Pool
