From the Nov. 12, 1951 fashion essay on high-style copies, LIFE sent a handful of models to 14th St. in Manhattan with a $10 bill to shop for a bargain outfit. This image ran with the following caption: "89 cent sweater has gold button and ribbon tab on its turtle neck. Wool skirt with elastic waistband is $5.95, plaid canvas bag is $2.45 (all from Lane)."
