Today at Angel Food was tough. Australia’s vote to legalize same sex marriage came up and our shift manager and Georgine said, “It’s about time.” Then Diane said, “Well I still think men need to run the world. And they should run households. We need them because they’re better at that.” I felt my heart dip a bit, knowing that she knows Julia and I are married. So I asked her to clarify. She said “We need men to run households.” I said, “Well you know our household is run by women. Do you still think we need a man?” And she said, “Well, isn’t one of you more like the man?” ? ? I said, “No.” She then said, “Well don’t you wish you had a man there? It would be a lot easier.” I know she’s coming from a very different background and generation, but it was hard to hear. Life is never black and white and I know Diane cares about us and we care about her, but it was a tough pill to swallow today. I also messed up Georgine’s coffee cake recipe and didn’t bake it long enough and she got annoyed. So today needs a do-over button. ?
