On the last day we were in Israel, we each planted a tree. This is something I remember doing as a kid in Hebrew school— donating money so that a tree could be planted in a far off place in your name. Planting a tree is supposed to symbolize an investment in the promise and future of Israel. The significance felt infinitely greater to be able to do it in person, standing on a grassy hilltop looking out at the desert. Especially after visiting the Holocaust Museum earlier in the week and seeing the juxtaposition of death with new life. My mother told me that when she visited Israel for the first time many years ago, she was hit with emotions the second the plane touched the ground. This was a place where Jewish people from all over the world were welcomed and came together. I debated posting this picture all day because the topic of Jerusalem is particularly weighty today. Perhaps I was naive thinking I could go and not address the current politics. I want to be clear and say that while I feel a connection to Israel, I am for peace first and foremost. But I don’t pretend to know how to get there. In Israel, we met with a chef who cooks alongside Palestinian chefs, we went to a hospital where they treat Syrian soldiers and heard from a woman who works at IsraAid helping refugees. All of this made me feel very positive about Israel. But I also know there was a lot we did not see. I left wanting to educate myself with an open mind.
