First it was a story. There had been many, many before it, but this one got traction. Timing? Tipping point? Zeitgeist? Thandie is just one of many who spoke out at a time, that for whatever reason, was a different one. Now, two months after the women began to come forward in droves to accuse powerful men of sexual harassment and assault, the world is taking notice. This era-defining shift in gender/socio-politics has a feel of permanence, hopefully introducing a new state of decorum regarding the behaviour of those in power, perceptions of women, and that boys will no longer have the excuse of ‘being boys’ who’ve grown up with a sense of entitlement to our bodies. What a sudden pause for reflection for all of us.
@TIME Magazine has named “the silence breakers” it’s ‘person’ of the year for 2017, referring to those women, and the global conversation they have started.
Editor in chief, Edward Felsenthal, said in an interview on the “Today” show on Wednesday that the #MeToo movement represented the “fastest-moving social change we’ve seen in decades and it began with individual acts of courage by women and some men too.” Featured here: Ashley Judd, Taylor Swift, former Uber engineer Susan Fowler and a woman whose face is obscured, intended to represent the women who haven't yet come forward.
