Cheetah numbers in the wild are dramatically declining. There are only 7,000 left in the wild, and their biggest threat is habitat loss. At the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute our scientists study cheetah reproduction. They are helping build a genetically diverse and self-sustaining population in human care. Our cheetahs living at SCBI participate in the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Cheetah Species Survival Plan, which makes breeding recommendations based on genetics. #WeSaveSpecies
