“Luce del mondo è amore” (the world’s light is love) recites the libretto of his latest masterpiece… I was perhaps as old as my young Virginia is today when Giacomo Puccini was already an invisible companion for me, at play and in my dreams. After over half a century, feeling emotional and grateful, I am returning from his beloved Torre del Lago with a happy burden: the responsibility of having been the recipient of the most prestigious prize named after him, a manifestation of the affection and esteem that so many people have honoured me with. Affection and esteem that I will work hard, with my entire being, to continue to deserve.
A heartfelt thanks to the Fondazione Festival Pucciniano, the municipality, the province, the region, the prefecture and all the public institutions involved in the awards ceremony for a recognition that marks my modest contribution to the diffusion of the work of a supreme master from the same region: Puccini, a Tuscan giant who knew how to absorb all the experience of Verdi’s genius, building on the past to then develop his own style, establishing new compositional horizons and gifting the world with opera’s last, epic golden age.
