From @artinstitutechi’s exhibition on Soviet art & remaking society through design: “In 1923 Kazimir Malevich started the State Institute for Artistic Culture (GINKhUK) in Petersburg. GINKhUK and its parallel institution in Moscow, INKhUK, were founded to promote visual arts research; their staff were ‘artist-scientists,’ in Malevich’s words. In the Department of Organic Culture, painters Maria, Boris, and Kseniia Ender conducted a series of experiments in sensory perception. Guided by a utopian desire to synthesize seeing and knowing, the group created abstractions that reflected the infinitely variable character of the natural world.”
