A hippopotamus soared over the ocean. A cartoon character burst into flames after drifting into a high-tension wire. And a 60-foot cat sent a plane and its 2 passengers plummeting. These are just a few of the fates met by the giant balloons that have glided through the Macy’s #ThanksgivingDayParade over the years. Around 3.5 million people are expected to line Manhattan’s streets tomorrow to watch this year’s parade, and millions more will view it on @nbc. (@samuelhodgson photographed crews inflating one of the balloons, depicting @frozens_olaf, earlier today.) The first #MacysParade, in 1924, looked a lot different from the one you’ll see tomorrow. For one thing, some of its stars were animals from the @centralparkzoo. The giant #balloons didn’t show up until a few years later. In the late 1920s, @Macy's began releasing them into the sky. In 1928, a balloon called the Sky Tiger descended into a Long Island neighborhood where “a tug of war ensued for its possession.” And 3 years later, Macy’s released a 287-foot-long dragon and some 16,000 smaller balloons. (That’s how the aforementioned hippo ended up over the ocean.) Visit the link in our profile to get a closer look at the milestones and mishaps of a nearly century-old holiday tradition. #?
