Azzedine Alaïa, the formidable French fashion designer who spurned the traditional fashion week calendar, has died. He was 77. Having grown up in Tunisia, he became interested in fashion after meeting an older, elegant midwife. "There was a woman in Tunisia called Madame Pinot. She was a midwife and had helped in the birth of my siblings and me. I assisted her. I helped women give birth to a lot of babies when I was very young. She’s the one who first taught me fashion. And she enrolled me in the École des Beaux-Arts." Alaïa will be sorely missed. #RIP
