Britain’s economy is slowing. Talks on quitting the EU have stalled. And the government is in disarray. But the national gloom seems to have bypassed Craven, an area of Yorkshire, in the north of England. This, according to national statistics, is Britain's happiest place. “We just go with the flow,” said Andrew Rankine, the mayor of Craven’s biggest town, Skipton. “We are who we are.” No one lives in Craven for the weather. Andrew said a sunny day “has been known to happen occasionally.” Fortunately, he added, “Skipton is one of those places which is absolutely beautiful in the rain — as long as you are dressed appropriately.” Among the other benefits to living in the area: the low crime rate. (The local magistrates court is under threat because it hears too few cases.) But most agree that the sense of community is what stands out. “People are a lot straighter, more blunt,” said Sebastian Fattorini, who moved to Skipton from London in 1998. “You’re not quite sure whether they are being friendly, then you realize they are being extremely friendly.” Now he loves the place, noting that people have time for one another, and that “if you died in your flat someone would notice.” @andrew_testa took this photo of Skipton.
