Craft... more fluid and difficult to concretely define than ever as exemplified by the inaugural @bbcwomanshour #BBCWomansHourCraftPrize which I was honoured to judge
The twelve finalists and their works currently on exhibition at @vamuseum were so different, which made judging difficult! But what struck me was how they combined meticulous craft practise with a moving narrative
This is the winner @phoebe_cummings who works with unfired clay on-site, creating installations that are designed to be ephemeral. This fountain has been eroding over time, with a trickle of water being emitted every day. All that beautifully carved and moulded flora will disintegrate and the clay will eventually be repurposed
Interesting to hear the views of @rosygreenlees @craftscouncil Tristram Hunt (director of @vamuseum ) Art historian Jacky Klein and Martina Margetts @royalcollegeofart discuss the relevance and future of craft...
Why is craft so often maligned in relation to fine/contemporary art? Is the future of making in jeopardy as arts/creative subjects are increasingly discouraged at school (in the UK specifically)? And even as a new generation becomes exposed and fascinated with craft (crafting Insta vids, rise of craftivism, publications like @holeandcorner etc) are we more interested in preserving tradition and techniques in aspic or truly harnessing the power of craft and evolving it to new places...
This prize surely represents the latter...
