? Coral reef restoration breakthrough! The teenage years can be hard, but for coral larvae about to metamorphose, this can be an especially difficult time—the reef-building species have to find a place to settle permanently. In a new study, Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute scientists have found that coral larvae produced in a lab from frozen sperm can successfully reach those “teenage” years, demonstrating the continued effectiveness of a tool key to coral reef restoration efforts in the future. Now that our scientists determined how to produce coral larvae at a larger scale with cryopreserved sperm, they hope to get permission to put the settled coral out in a nursery setting in the ocean off the coast of Lady Elliot Island, the southernmost part of the Great Barrier Reef, pictured here. This is the first major step from a laboratory setting toward getting these corals out on the reef. This is a critical proof of concept that we will be able to take these techniques out of the lab and scale them up in a way that may allow us to effectively rebuild coral reefs in the case of collapses. #WeSaveSpecies @conservationnation @スミソニアン博物館
