The memory of an elephant is legendary (every heard the old adage “an elephant never forgets”?) which can make it very difficult for orphans overcome their past traumas. For instance, Pare was so weak when we rescued him that he was unable to stand up without a Keeper’s assistance. Even once he regained his strength, these scary memories stuck with him and he developed a fear of lying down to sleep, choosing instead to slumber upright by leaning against his stable walls. Pare eventually got over this phobia, but as he demonstrates, orphans’ emotional wounds often take longer to heal than their physical ones.
