Historians consider The Age of Enlightenment as the column that sustains the foundations of modern society and the origin of revolutionary thought. The old way of life was represented by superstition, an angry God, and absolute submission to authority. The thinkers of the Age of Reason/Enlightenment introduced a new way of thinking, championing the accomplishments of humankind. The idea that individuals did not have to accept despair, that science and reason could bring happiness and progress. That Kings did not rule by divine right, that they had an obligation to their subjects. For the first time, meaning to humanity was sought beyond existing for divinities. Empiricism and rationalism were challenged and great contributions to the arts, astronomy, physics and mathematics were achieved. Creed and church and state were separated, which considerably reduced wars due to religious differences. John Locke defended the displacement of a monarch who would not protect the lives, liberties, and property of the English people. Women such as Mary Wollstonecraft believed that educated women could strengthen society and could intellectually be equivalent to their husbands, yet another radical idea. Jean-Jaques Rousseau stated that society should be ruled by the ‘general will’ of the people. Europeans pondered the implications for nearly a century, Americans put them into practice (the entire opening of the Declaration of Independence is Thomas Jefferson's application of John Locke's ideas). The constitutions of the first states/the United States Constitution reflect Enlightenment principles, and Benjamin Franklin made many Enlightenment ideas accessible to the general public. This transition culminated in the creation of libraries and universities where knowledge was freely shared, as well as the opening of museums and centres of culture, since art and the divine now became the property of man. #enlightenment or #regression ?
