“I’ve gone from a shack to a shack,” said Judith Sikade. “I’m fighting for everything I have.” The end of apartheid was supposed to be a beginning in South Africa. Judith saw herself escaping the townships, where the government had forced black people to live. She aimed to find work in Cape Town. But more than 2 decades later, the 69-year-old lives on the garbage-strewn dirt of Crossroads township, where @joaosilva_nyt took her photo. For black South Africans, #apartheid has essentially persisted in economic form. This reality is palpable as turmoil now seizes #SouthAfrica. Underlying the anger: deep-seated disparities in wealth. 10% of all South Africans — mostly white — owns more than 90% of national wealth. In the Sea Point neighborhood of Cape Town, women gather on the beach for an evening yoga class. High above the city, on Table Mountain, American exchange students recount a sky diving experience. To the east, in Judith’s community, people keep an eye out for the police, who descend to tear down their shacks. “Where’s the freedom?” Judith said. “Where are the changes?” Swipe left to see more photos — of the townships outside of Cape Town, and of Sea Point — and visit the link in our profile to read more.
