Edward Eslin (e.e.) Cummings Patchin Place home in NYC. Anthony Zerbe first took me here after I had heard him speak 45 minutes of Cummings in an evening he called “Behind the Broken Words”, a line from a Cummings poem. The music, the absolute erotic rhythms I could feel as Zerbe spoke his words turned me on to years of how poetry was always meant to be heard instead of mindlockingly studied. Every time I visit here now, I am reminded of how the creative manifestation, a small poem slipped under your girl’s pillow, is the best way to really say how much you appreciate her being there, and with you.
I took my wife here today. I opened the gate for her and brought her to his door. We had one of his poems spoken by Zerbe to us at our wedding. She stared at the door. I stared at her.
