A Real Danish Family
British artist Gillian Wearing’s sculpture of an existing Danish family, freshly unveiled outside the National Gallery of Denmark this afternoon. 492 families of varying configurations from all over the country applied to model for this work, a jury then selected the winner.
Michael, a 29-year-old man born to Danish parents in Italy, and Yenny-Louise, a 28-year-old woman who was born in Colombia but grew up in Denmark with adoptive parents, met, moved in together, opened a coffee shop and had their baby daughter all within a year. Their story is at once unique and emblematic of contemporary Denmark. In immortalising them in bronze, Wearing also celebrates the enduring importance of family as a social unit.
