Edit- A number of these men have issued statements. However, I believe it is pressure (like in this post) that is a contributing factor to getting many men to comment. If people (mainly women) hadn’t reacted to the men’s silence, it is unlikely that as many men would have commented. The problem of male silence about gender based violence is enormous, and needs to be broken in daily life as we work to be better allies, not just in situations like this. Women need men to stand up and speak out against sexism, sexual violence, misconduct and misogyny. Just as white people need to be on the frontlines battling racism and white supremacy.
Patriarchy (and all systems of oppression) involves an inherent power imbalance. It is unjust to condemn and punish women for not coming forward yet never to hold the men who knew, and inevitably hold more power, accountable.
Power imbalances and cultural imbalances will only shift when we recognize that our liberation is bound in each others. That when someone is silenced, the burden is on those with a voice to speak out and uplift the voices of those can’t speak.
I don’t know any woman in the entertainment industry who hasn’t experienced rampant sexism. Hell, I can’t think of any industry where it doesn’t exist. I can’t, in fact, think of many days in my life that haven’t been touched by some form of sexism. Couple that with folks with intersecting identities such as race, faith, ability, sexuality, gender identity..... you get the picture.
Men! We need you, we welcome you, become allies, better yet, become co-conspirators in taking down the patriarchy and all systems of oppression.... goddess knows they aren’t working for you either!
I stand with #ashleyjudd, @rosemcgowan and all the women who have spoken out.
PS: I’m not calling out the men on this list. I’m calling IN men in general to speak out, stand up & support!
