This is from @donnakaran 's famous 1992 "In Women we Trust" ad campaign shot by Peter Lindbergh portraying the "what-if" scenario of a female president. I've chosen to post this particular image because of the male onlooker's gaze at model Rosemary McGrotha's cold shoulders, in one of Karan's signature dresses (yup... cold shoulders of summer of 2016 do have early precedents) ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The internet is exploding and I don't even know where to begin with the misguidedness of what appeared to be mediated thoughts, but from a fashion perspective I can only add to the heavy disappointment and bewilderment at Donna Karan's remarks on the Harvey Weinstein allegations: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ "I also think how do we display ourselves? How do we present ourselves as women? What are we asking? Are we asking for it by presenting all the sensuality and all the sexuality" ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Says the woman who gave us deep plunge necklines, form fitting bodysuits and high-split wrap skirts that were part of Karan's emancipatory wardrobe for women. These were clothes that were supposed to enable women to own their sexuality without compromising their position in the workplace in relation to men Interestingly the fact that Karan no longer designs for her own signature line nor does she have a say in shaping the way women dress today (at least in so far as mainstream trends are concerned), adds a hint of bitterness to her comments, as she questions female attire and its role in sexual abuse/harassment all over the world. Is it any coincidence that her later collections fell out of step with what women wore in stark comparison to the way she broke fresh ground in the 80s/90s ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Note the comments came out of her mouth as she bared her shoulders on the red carpet. Is she "asking for it" in that instance? One wonders what exactly is the "correct" mode of attire then to prevent the Weinsteins of the world from beckoning women to hotel rooms/boardrooms/office cupboards...
