It’s a boy!

Last night, Yatta gave birth to a beautiful baby bull. We’ve named this new addition to the extended DSWT family Yoyo. Both mother and son are doing wonderfully, and Yatta’s firstborn, five-year-old Yetu, is delighted to be a big sister.
When Yatta was just a month old, her own mother was killed by ivory poachers. We rescued the tiny calf, raised her at the DSWT, and eventually helped her transition back to a life in the wild. 18 years later, we’re bursting with pride that Yatta is able to have the nuclear elephant family that she never got to experience for herself.
Yatta has chosen to remain close to our Ithumba stockades (like many wild-living orphans, she was keen to celebrate her new arrival with her human and elephant family), so we will have plenty more to share about Yoyo in the coming days. In the meantime, let’s send Yatta a massive congratulations on her new addition!
