You’re looking at a water bear, the world’s most indestructible animal. The microscopic water bear, also known as a tardigrade, will likely survive whatever cataclysmic event the universe decides to throw at earth.

Asteroids, supernova and gamma ray bursts are no match for the water bear according to a new study from scientists at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics and Oxford University. Water bears can survive 30 years without food, endure temperatures of up to 150 degrees Celsius, the deep sea and even the frozen vacuum of space. The water-dwelling micro animal can live up to 60 years and grow as big as 0.5mm. As long as we have oceans on the planet, the water bear can survive.
The water bear proves that once life gets going on a planet, it’s hard to wipe it out entirely. This broadens the scope of possibility for lifeforms on other planets within and outside our solar system.
