One more thought to add: I think that when people hear and see people in my line of work talking about gun violence there is often an automatic assumption that what is being pitched is doing away with the second amendment. Maybe that true for some. It's just not how I feel. I also define myself as a concerned parent first and by what I do for a living a distant second. I personally don't own any firearms, that is my choice. But it would be arrogant of me to assume that is a choice that should be made for everyone. It's simply not how a free society works. But the frightening numbers of deaths each year by firearms indicates there is a problem. So how do we unite as a country that to fix it? This isn't about who you voted for it's about protecting our children's future.
