Today: a little ode to the men who raised me. I often get accused of "man hating" (that's reductive idiot speak for pointing out the systemic privilege of white bros. And God forbid I should be sick of having issues about which I am a total expert explained to be my men with South Park avatars!) But I don't hate men- I love them (hey @jackantonoff.) I collaborate with them (@saltyshepnyc @jessepooljesse @timives, my saints and saviors) and I have even fucked them (well, one. Once. Only once. It felt weird and I'm so busy.) But truly I was raised by the best. My father's paternal accomplishments are too many to name, but I'll throw this out there: when my body started to change from twig to pear he told me, looking pained by my self-hatred, that in the Renaissance I would have been considered the ideal model (hey, he's a painter, he uses what he can connect to.) I held onto it like a lucky coin. Somewhere, even if it was hundreds of years ago, I was perfect. Meanwhile my genius Godfather @jerrysaltz supports female artists as a leading art critic and currently holds one man reproductive justice protests in the road near his house. He always told me I was smart and "a real weirdo" and he taught me a bad British accent, a love of seltzer and how to say "fuck off." Today he posted this self-portrait by Artemisia Gentileschi, the only female in the Italian Baroque painting movement, and said it looked like me. He's still doing his part to make me feel seen and empowered. I'm so lucky. Cuz guess what? Fame doesn't make you feel special. Shopping doesn't make you feel special. Giving and receiving love and honest acknowledgment is IT. So today I acknowledge you, gentleman. Thank you to all the men making the women in their lives feel safe and seen, now more than ever.
