Got some climbing in before the rain and did The Reckoning (V14) and flashed The Shelter V13 yesterday! Snuck in an ascent of lesser known The Chickening V12 as well. An excellent bunch of boulders! It really struck me how much all the information that is available about climbs nowadays helps to climb them quicker and quicker. They say a picture is worth a thousand words. And then there's videos. Beta videos where you are able to observe and internalize the perfect execution and even train specifically for it well in advance. Not only that but maybe even more importantly you can learn key failure points and the best approach strategy to doing a climb quickly and efficiently. I tried The Reckoning a couple weeks ago with no knowledge about it but the grade. After a tiring session and lots of lost skin I walked away with a sequence that I'd come up with. It felt really hard. Later on my friend Paul showed me beta for this climb - beta that he in turn got from the first ascentionist Tim who spent who knows how long to find it. It made all the difference and probably dropped a grade from the sequence that I was trying. To be honest without this beta I may not have climbed this boulder in the limited time that I had. On the contrary, had there been a video to observe, I would have had a good shot of doing it in a session. Often we take for granted the value of the information available. And with a trend of reporting how fast someone does a climb we end up comparing apples to oranges. But even with all the beta videos around most times I still prefer to go through the process myself and enjoy climbs for all their worth! ? @paul_nadler #liveclimbrepeat @blackdiamond @lasportivagram
