This male horned guan photographed at the @stlzoo is a part of a species whose population is declining at an alarming rate. These endangered birds, named for the bright red horn on top of their heads, build their nests high above predators in leafy trees throughout Guatemala and Mexico. Unfortunately, their habitats are being destroyed mainly due to deforestation caused by logging and agricultural expansion. Currently, only 1,000-2,000 horned guans exist in the wild.
