Every visit home to Albuquerque we come to this beautiful old cottonwood near an alfalfa field that is the sweetest smelling, wind-swaying blanket of green. The cottonwood leaves shimmer above us and the tree trunk winds crooked and thick like strong arthritic fingers of our grandparents and parents and every strand of our ancestors who have worked very hard in their lives. We come here in happy times and sad times too. The tree listens and watches and we breathe and laugh and say thank you to the things, even the hard to bear things, that remind us of longevity and hope and endurance.
