Today is World Rhino Day! The future of these magnificent animals is incredibly uncertain, with all five of the world's rhino species under threat from poaching and habitat loss. The Taronga Conservation Society is committed to conserving rhinos and is a founding member of the International Rhino Foundation (IRF), which has championed the survival of the world’s rhino species through conservation and research for 25 years. Taronga Western Plains Zoo is home to three species – black, white and the greater one-horned (or Indian) rhino. We have successfully bred all three – and in one year we even welcomed a calf to each species. Today, we are excited to announce that their is another juvenile on the way! Bakhita, the first black rhino female to be born at Taronga Western Plains Zoo, is pregnant with her third calf and is due to give birth from mid-October this year.
