From his stand-up tours & specials; to acting in feature films and TV shows; to releasing his first book Modern Romance: An Investigation in 2015; to creating, writing, and starring in the critically acclaimed Netflix series Masters of None; Ansari has definitely made a mark in the entertainment industry. His role as Tom Haverford on the NBC series Parks & Recreation received praise from critics including Entertainment Weekly naming him one of 2009’s “Breakout TV Stars.” In 2016, Ansari’s performance as Dev on Master of None landed him a nomination for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor. The series itself received four Emmy nominations last year, which led to Ansari and his co-creator Alan Yang winning the Emmy for Outstanding Writing. Last night at the 69th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards, Ansari won his second Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series last night alongside Lena Waithe for their episode titled “Thanksgiving.” Waithe was the first black woman nominated in that Emmy category and made history by becoming the first black woman to win! Lena Waithe is an American Actress, Producer, and Screenwriter. She realized she wanted to be a TV writer at the age of seven and received strong family support from her single mother and grandmother. Waithe has written on shows such Fox’s Bones, Nickelodeon’s How to Rock, and the 2013 web series Hello Cupid. She also served as the producer on the 2014 film Dear White People. Waithe’s role as Denise on Master of None became an instant fan favorite and is inspired by her real life. She told Hollywood Reporter that the episode started with Ansari simply asking her about her coming out story,"It's a beautiful tribute to my family, to black women everywhere, to black matriarchs. It's just such a wonderful ode to my childhood and my growing up and my evolution as a woman and being comfortable with myself.” Last night, she delivered a powerful message to her ‘LGBTQIA’ family, "I see each and every one of you.The things that make us different – those are our superpowers." ❤️?❤️
