We walked through the slums most of the day. "This is Bombay, not Mumbai", he kept saying. He had written a booked called "Shantaram" years ago and he was walking me through its history: the torture, the stabbings, the Indian mafia, helping these people in these very slums: the day of the fire when they started calling him 'The Doctor'. We weaved our way through a fantastic labyrinth of Van Gogh powdery colors, lead by the 'King of Gypsies'. Everyone has a title here. If I lived here, I thought, what would be mine? If I had escaped prison and ended up here, what would have been my trajectory? If I had robbed banks with a suit on, a gentleman criminal, would I have gotten caught eventually, shot or been shot, become an arrogant rich man with six kids? Why here? Why did he end up here? How is it that I'm here, now? These people seemed happy. As poor as the area was, there was community, a contentment, a feeling that base survival cultivates a real appreciation of each day alive. But there were those that took advantage, those who were clearly in charge and monitored everything in the slums. I met all of them. We are all together. They offered me dessert. We laughed and they told me stories of attempted ambushes. Sometimes we ate quietly. Sometimes I would glance up looking for something revealed, an evil, but I never saw one. After one of the longest stretches of silence of the day, I asked them about murder, and while it hung in the air they kept their eyes heavily downward as they took the last bites of a desert I can't remember the name of. #gregorydavidroberts #shantaram #india #bombay
