Claude Monet's "Roses" 1925-1926.

It was deeply moving to be up close and see each individual brushstroke and realize that a living, breathing, human being made them nearly 90 years ago.

This piece was made close to the time of Monet's death, and his eyesight had been failing for some time. He used his experience, memory, and feeling to pick the colors to paint with. "Try to forget what objects you have before you - a tree, a house, a field, or whatever. Merely think, 'Here is a little square of blue, here an oblong of pink, here a streak of yellow,' and paint it just as it looks to you, the exact color and shape, until it gives you your own impression of the scene before you."
