From @nytarchives | In August 1960, the 81,000-ton #QueenMary steamed out of Southampton, England, “with flags flying and sirens hooting,” @ニューヨーク・タイムズ reported. The giant ocean liner was bound for #NewYorkHarbor, where upon its arrival, one of our staff photographers took this photo of the ship cruising past the #StatueofLiberty. But it wasn’t all smooth sailing; thanks to a seamen’s strike, the Queen Mary departed 2 weeks behind schedule. 7 years later, in December 1967, this queen of the sea would sail her 3,794,017th and final nautical mile before mooring in Long Beach, California. She wouldn’t sail again. Another 7 years later, in November 1974, @ニューヨーク・タイムズ reported that “the Queen Mary is a Hyatt House.” The City of Long Beach paid $3.4 million for the vessel and turned her into land‐linked hotel — and, our article pointed out, “a wax museum, a candy store, a souvenir stand, a convention center, a seashell shop, a jewelry store, a movie set, a bus stop, a rug store, fish 'n chips stand and a wedding chapel.” #?️ #? #tbt
