A few readers have asked me to write about 9/11 over the years, but as a New Yorker who knew people who experienced so much worse, it never really felt like a story that was mine to tell. Then, someone DMed me today, who seemed almost offended that I wasn't giving the day more attention, and I thought, maybe not writing about it is sending the wrong message too. I'll be honest. Her message made me angry at first, but it inspired me to write my story (and I imagine the collective story of many New Yorkers who were there but not THERE there) and for that I am thankful.
