“When an artist uses a conceptual form of art, it means that all of the planning and decisions are made beforehand and the execution is a perfunctory affair. The idea becomes a machine that makes the art”— #SolLeWitt, born on this date in 1928. LeWitt’s "Wall Drawing #146" (1972), from our collection, exemplifies his idea that the systems shaping the object become the work itself and the object becomes an optional by-product. By leaving only the instruction “all two-part combinations of blue arcs from corners and sides and blue straight, not straight and broken lines” the look of the drawing is shaped by the architecture of the site, the size of the wall, and the individual or individuals producing the drawing.
