“The advocacy work that I do is not so much with a focus on the top one percent of the industry. It's really recognizing that the modeling industry is an aspirational business that has many more people trying to work in the industry than there is going to be legitimate modeling work,” said Sara Ziff @saraziff, founder of the Model Alliance, a labor advocacy organization. “And so you can imagine the hundreds of thousands of girls who are kind of willing to do whatever it takes, whether that means going to extremes in their diet to try to lose weight, or being put in unprofessional and perhaps dangerous, compromising situations at a casting or a photo shoot and not having any recourse.” Ahead of New York Fashion Week, we interviewed models about their experiences in the industry with racism, body-shaming, abuse, non-payment and more.
