In the video for Starcrawler’s single “Ants,” frontwoman Arrow de Wilde, 18, takes to the stage in a straightjacket and bedazzled underwear. The singer erupts into gangly spasms to the rhythm of the gritty track, while fake blood drips from her mouth between verses and her bandmates slay in the background. “I want to sonically blow people away when we perform,” says Austin Smith, the band’s 21-year-old drummer. “I want to see people’s jaws drop in astonishment.” Formed in 2015, Starcrawler channels the Ramones in sound and David Bowie in fearless selfhood. After they began booking small gigs around Los Angeles, “Ants”—a song about an insect infestation written by their 17-year-old guitarist, Henri Cash—caught the ear of Elton John, who played it on his Beats 1 radio show, Elton John’s Rocket Hour, earlier this year. “I couldn’t contain my excitement,” says Arrow. “The fact that Elton John heard and liked our music? That’s crazy.” Since then, the band—which includes bassist Tim Franco, 20—has been recording its debut album. “I hope our music will make people feel good,” says Henri. “And make them want to break things.” Rock is not dead. #TheIconsIssue ??: @emmanmontalvan
